Burnout is often misunderstood as simply being stressed. While stress is a component, burnout is a more complex and prolonged state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion.
It typically develops over time, often in response to ongoing demands that exceed a person’s ability to cope. This can happen in professional environments, caregiving roles, or even personal circumstances.
Common signs of burnout include persistent fatigue, reduced motivation, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and a sense of detachment. Over time, individuals may begin to feel ineffective or disconnected from their work or responsibilities.
One of the challenges with burnout is that it often goes unrecognised until it becomes severe. Many people continue pushing through, believing they simply need to try harder or rest more, without addressing the underlying causes.
Counselling helps individuals identify these patterns early and understand what is contributing to their burnout. This includes exploring workload, expectations, boundaries, and coping strategies.
Recovery from burnout is not about quick fixes. It involves creating sustainable changes that support long term wellbeing. With the right support, individuals can regain balance, restore energy, and reconnect with a sense of purpose.
