From Survival to Growth: the Cardiac Journey is a 48-minute guided audio presentation and downloadable activity guide for cardiac survivors, heart attack survivors, heart surgery patients, and people living with chronic heart disease. It explores the psychological impact of surviving a cardiac event, the emotional price of survival, resilience, identity, recovery, and personal growth through structured reflective exercises. The resource combines education with a self-guided psychological intervention to help participants better understand their cardiac journey and recognise strengths that emerged through adversity.
Cardiac Recovery
Originally presented to the Helderberg Cardiac Support Group, this recording is now available online for those who were unable to attend the live presentation, as well as for anyone living with heart disease, cardiac conditions, or recovering from a heart attack or cardiac procedure.
Most people think of survival as the end of the story. After a heart attack, bypass surgery, valve replacement, pacemaker implantation, or another cardiac event, the focus naturally shifts to physical recovery and rehabilitation.
But what if survival after a heart attack or heart surgery is only one part of a much larger journey?
This presentation explores the often-overlooked psychological and emotional aspects of being a cardiac survivor. It examines the personal cost of surviving a serious cardiac event while introducing a different perspective on resilience, adjustment, and life after heart disease.
Rather than offering generic coping strategies or a list of tips, this resource combines an educational presentation with a guided reflective process. Throughout the recording, you'll be invited to complete a series of carefully structured activities using the accompanying downloadable workbook. Together, the recording and activity guide create a practical, self-guided intervention designed to help you reflect on your own cardiac journey, recognise strengths that may already be present, and explore possibilities for moving from survival to growth on your cardiac journey.
Whether you are living with chronic heart disease, recovering from a recent cardiac event, supporting a loved one with a heart condition, or simply interested in understanding the psychological impact of cardiac illness, this resource offers an opportunity to engage with your experience in a thoughtful and meaningful way.
