Accessing Online Counselling: A Practical Guide

Online counselling allows you to meet with a counsellor remotely rather than travelling to an office. With a little preparation, you can create a private, comfortable setting that helps you focus on your session.

Choosing an Online Counselling Format

Online counselling commonly takes place through video calls, although the formats available depend on the counsellor and service. Video sessions allow you to see and speak with your counsellor remotely, while other arrangements may be possible where offered.

When considering online counselling, think about your circumstances, access to technology and preferred way of communicating. If you are unsure which format is suitable, discuss this with the counsellor before arranging your first session.

Privacy, Technology and Your Online Environment

A few practical steps can help you prepare for an online counselling session:

  • Choose a private space. Find somewhere you are unlikely to be interrupted and where other people cannot easily overhear your conversation.

  • Check your technology. Test your internet connection, device, camera and microphone before the appointment.

  • Consider your surroundings. Headphones may help with privacy, and a comfortable seat can make it easier to concentrate.

  • Plan for technical difficulties. Ask your counsellor in advance what to do if the connection fails or the session is interrupted.

Online sessions still require appropriate privacy and confidentiality. Avoid using public Wi-Fi or shared devices where others might access your information, and discuss any concerns about privacy with your counsellor.

Preparing for an Online Counselling Session

You do not need to prepare a complete account of your difficulties before your first session. However, it may help to consider what has prompted you to seek support and what you hope to explore.

You might find these steps useful:

  1. Think about what matters most to you. Consider the main concern you would like to discuss, even if you are not yet sure how to explain it.

  2. Be open about your experience. Share your thoughts and feelings at a pace that feels manageable.

  3. Discuss your goals. You and your counsellor can explore what you would like to work towards and how you might recognise progress.

  4. Allow time afterwards. If a session raises difficult thoughts or emotions, give yourself some time to reflect before returning to other activities.

However, its suitability depends on your circumstances and support needs. If you have concerns about whether online sessions are appropriate for you, discuss these with a qualified counsellor.
