Adjustment, Grief & Bereavement Counselling

Adjustment challenges, grief, and bereavement are deeply personal experiences that can affect every part of life. Whether you are mourning the death of a loved one, facing the end of an important relationship, or struggling to adjust to major life changes — including chronic illness, caregiving responsibilities, or loss of independence — your emotions may feel overwhelming or, at times, strangely distant. Both reactions are common, yet many people find it difficult to process their experience in a healthy, integrated way.
Adjustment, grief, and bereavement counselling can provide support as you navigate these moments of transition.

In Tuesdays with Morrie (1997), Mitch Albom describes how his terminally ill professor, Morrie Schwartz, set aside a dedicated time each day to feel his grief fully — for his declining health, his changing identity, and the life he was leaving behind. Outside of that time, he gently reminded himself that his emotions would be held later. This simple idea helped him stay connected to life without avoiding his pain.

This principle can also support people facing bereavement or major adjustments. Life does not pause for our sorrow, yet unprocessed grief often resurfaces at unexpected times. By consciously “making space” for your emotions — through reflection, writing, conversations, or guided support — you allow yourself to honour the loss while still engaging with daily responsibilities. It’s not about suppressing feelings; it’s about integrating them at a pace you can manage.

Every person grieves and adjusts differently. What brings comfort to one may not work for another. Counselling offers a supportive space to explore strategies, understand your emotional responses, and find a way forward that respects both your loss and your need to keep living.

If you are struggling with bereavement, life transitions, or significant adjustment challenges, I invite you to reach out. Support is available online or on-site — at home, in hospitals, retirement facilities, or any setting where you need it most. Together, we can navigate this season with understanding, compassion, and purpose.
