Exploring Beyond Borders Counselling Methods

When life feels overwhelming, finding the right support can make all the difference. I want to share with you some insights into counselling methods that go beyond traditional boundaries. These approaches are designed to meet you where you are, no matter your background or situation. Whether you are facing burnout, trauma, or the challenges of palliative care, there is a way forward that honours your unique story.

Understanding Beyond Borders Counselling

Beyond borders counselling is about breaking down barriers. It’s about reaching out across cultures, distances, and life circumstances to offer compassionate support. This approach recognises that healing is not one-size-fits-all. Instead, it embraces diversity and flexibility, tailoring methods to fit your needs.

For example, counselling can be offered online, making it accessible no matter where you live. This is especially important for those in remote areas or with limited mobility. It also means that families and medical professionals can find specialised help without the stress of travel.

Key Counselling Methods Used by Beyond Borders

There are several counselling methods that work well in a beyond borders setting. Here are some of the most effective ones:

  1. Solution Focused Therapy

Given the transformations in this kind of therapy over the last two decades, the original name with "Solution Focused" included in the name, is very unfortunate. This often creates the impression that the aim is to find solutions to human problems, and worse, that there always are solutions to problems. Instead, Solution Focused Therapy, guides you to become the best version of yourself amidst your circumstances (i.e. without a "solution" to your problem) and reality.

  2. Mindfulness-Based Solution Focused Therapy

Mindfulness teaches you to stay present and observe your feelings without judgment. This can reduce stress and improve emotional balance, especially when dealing with trauma or burnout. Integrating this with Solution Focused therapy (SFT), SFT becomes a very effective vehicle to present mindfulness in a way that is unique to each individual.

  3. Family Systems Therapy

This approach looks at the family as a whole. It helps improve communication and resolve conflicts, which is vital when multiple people are affected by a challenge like illness or loss. SFT derives from many Family Systems Therapy principles, making a combination of these two, very potent.

  4. Trauma-Informed Solution Focused Therapy

Trauma-informed counselling recognises the impact of trauma on your life and works gently to support healing. It prioritises safety, trust, and empowerment.

Each of these methods can be adapted to work online or in person, making them accessible to a wide range of people.

When you choose beyond borders counselling, you are choosing a partnership. The counsellor walks alongside you, offering guidance without judgment. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Personalised Care

Solution Focused Therapy allows for every single client to be treated in a tailor-made way, zooming in on your resources, strengths and skills, to harness that for change.

Understanding your cultural background is key. Counsellors trained in beyond borders methods respect your values and traditions, creating a safe space for healing.

  • Flexible Access

Whether you prefer face-to-face sessions or online meetings, the support is designed to fit your lifestyle. This flexibility helps reduce barriers to getting help.

Practical Tips for Engaging with Counselling

Starting counselling can feel daunting, but it’s a brave and important step. Here are some tips to help you get the most from your sessions:

  • Be Open and Honest

Share your thoughts and feelings as openly as you can. Remember, your counsellor is there to support you, not to judge.

  • Set Clear Goals

Think about what you want to achieve. It could be managing stress better, improving relationships, or finding peace with a difficult situation.

  • "Pay attention" Outside Sessions

You may be asked to notice certain things in-between session, these may be key to, and drive change.

  • Ask Questions

If something is unclear or you want to understand it better, don’t hesitate to ask. Your counsellor wants you to feel comfortable.

  • Be Patient

Healing may take time and progress might be slow, but every step forward counts.
