The Rising Popularity of ChatGPT as a Therapist

Updated: Jul 30

The rising popularity of ChatGPT as a therapist highlights how people view therapy—and what they hope to gain from it. For many, ChatGPT has become a kind of "pocket therapist"—always available, instantly responsive, and free.

Why People Turn to ChatGPT for Therapy

Users often engage in ChatGPT therapy to organize thoughts, gain clarity, or—most often—receive advice. This behavior reflects a widespread perception of therapy as a place where a wise expert listens, weighs all factors, and delivers the “right” answer.

Naturally, many potential clients are disappointed—or even shocked—to learn that this is not the true purpose of therapy. In fact, proper counseling generally avoids direct advice-giving. This reality can be challenging for those expecting concrete solutions straight away.

The Deeper Need Behind Seeking Advice

The impulse to be told what to do can come from many sources:

  • A wish to avoid accountability

  • Feeling too overwhelmed or traumatized to act

  • Low confidence in one’s own judgment

  • A culture of instant solutions—ask a question, get a quick answer

  • The belief that so-called experts always know better

This belief assumes that a therapist—after just a few sessions—can somehow absorb and evaluate your life experiences and personal history. They would consider environmental, developmental, and educational influences, as well as upbringing, trauma, relationships, and media exposure. Ultimately, people expect a therapist to distill all of that into a handful of wise suggestions that will resolve everything.

The Limits of “ChatGPT as Therapist”

Even if the advice were helpful, what happens when your next problem arises? Do you return for another answer? And what about the next time? The therapist—or the AI—may become little more than a life guru, an oracle.

But has anything within you actually changed? Have you developed greater insight? Do you trust yourself more? These are the questions therapy is meant to help you answer.

It's essential to understand that while seeking advice can be beneficial, it may not lead to lasting personal growth. Relying solely on external sources for direction can prevent individuals from exploring their own capabilities.

Can ChatGPT Therapy Evolve?

To be clear, I’m not dismissing the use of ChatGPT for personal support. Using it to sort through ideas or explore different perspectives can be helpful. It offers an accessible way to reflect on one’s feelings. But if we’re talking about actual therapy, we’re not there yet.

The Need for Evolution in AI Therapy

Perhaps a more helpful future lies in training AI not just to advise, but to ask constructive, therapeutic questions—questions that foster reflection, self-trust, and genuine growth. For instance, instead of providing direct answers, AI could prompt users to reflect on their feelings and motivations.

This could involve guiding individuals to consider their past experiences and how they have shaped their current situations. By doing this, ChatGPT could assist users in uncovering their own understanding instead of merely offering quick fixes.

Building Connections with AI

Furthermore, developing a more interactive and compassionate AI could create a deeper connection. If the AI can engage users through empathetic responses, it might help build trust and encourage vulnerability. This evolution could make ChatGPT a more meaningful ally in one’s personal journey.

The Importance of Personal Growth

Ultimately, genuine therapy is about more than just finding answers. It's about the transformative process of diving deep into one's emotions and experiences. The goal is to enhance self-awareness and empower individuals to confront challenges on their own.

For long-term success in therapy—whether with a human therapist or AI like ChatGPT—growth must come from within. Positive change should stem from implementing one’s insights in real life. This is where true progress occurs.

ChatGPT as Therapist

In conclusion, while ChatGPT may serve as a helpful tool for immediate questions and reflection, it cannot replace the depth and complexity of true therapeutic work. Building this bridge between AI and authentic therapeutic principles may be the first step toward making ChatGPT therapy something more than just a digital advice machine.

For those navigating mental health challenges, seeking support through traditional therapy remains invaluable. And integrating AI as a complementary resource could enhance one's overall journey toward self-discovery and growth.
