Often clients who come for counselling don’t realise that they are already doing things to cope with their problems / to make things better, or at least preventing it from getting worse!
To make them aware of this I would ask them: What are you doing to cope with your problem / to make things better, or at least preventing it from getting worse?
Very often they would contribute it to external factors, factors outside of themselves – medication, a previous therapist, family members, friends etc. Although these factors play a role, sometimes even a huge role, mostly these factors only enable us (or create an environment) to do certain things ourselves, to create change. These factors in themselves can rarely change us, in the end we need to make the change happen!
By saying this I am not minimising the importance of the role of these previously mentioned factors, but we still need to do something with the assistance / help / advice / support we receive.
Now my question to you, is: What are YOU doing to cope with your problem / to make things better, or at least preventing it from getting worse?
